The AOUK Research Committee exists to promote clinical research in the treatment of patients with musculoskeletal disorders in the UK and Ireland.

The Committee attempts to facilitate and co-ordinate multi-centre research trials. They receive technical support from the Clinical Investigations Department of the AO Foundation in Davos. The logistic and financial support is provided by the AOUK chapter of the AO Foundation. AO Faculty members throughout the UK are invited to seek support from the Research Committee.

The AOUK has recently allocated funding to undertake a research priority setting exercise. This has been started in the long bone group and has taken the form of a 2-stage Delphi questionnaire process. Research suggestions proposed by the membership were reported back to all in a summative form and then scored by the members for their clinical importance.

Currently, the 10 most strongly supported research questions are being worked up, search strings created and systematic literature reviews conducted. This also includes identifying current registered active trials.

The results of this research priority setting exercise will be made available to AO Faculty members during 2008. With the groundwork established, we will seek chief investigators, and identify collaborative units and research leads from the AOUK group. Study designs and trial protocols can then be developed to seek major grant funding.

Notifications will be published for members to seek more information as it becomes available.
