Liam Murphy: 1933-2017
It is with great regret that I report the death of Liam Murphy who passed away after a short illness on May 13th. He was born and graduated in Cork, and after his orthopaedic training, was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Chertsey and Epsom Hospitals in the UK.
He developed a keen interest in trauma, and was an early enthusiast in AO techniques, and in 1978 was responsible with Alan Apley in the setting up of the immensely popular and successful AO courses at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. As an accomplished educationalist, and erudite communicator, he was not without many amusing turns of phrase – “remember, a screw hole should be regarded as an opportunity – not an obligation”.
He served on the old AOVA for many years, and encouraged many changes in educational content of the courses, both in Switzerland and internationally, which he promoted with typical persuasiveness and grace. As co-editor of later AO manuals, his concise and easily readable dissertations were in some measure responsible for their great success.
For all who knew him he was always approachable had a typically quirky Irish turn of phrase, and was always a caring mentor, friend and colleague to all of us. He will be greatly missed.
He leaves behind his wife Pam, and three children.
